National History Bee

Dear CAVA Parents,

We are excited to announce that we will be participating in the National History Bee this year.  The National History Bee is an individual academic competition for elementary and middle school students.  It will test their knowledge of a wide range of historical topics.  There are several stages to the competition.

Stage 1: This will be the competition that we hold within our school.  CAVA students will compete to determine the top 4 students from Northern California and the top 4 student from Southern California that will then participate in the Online Regional Qualifying Exam.  If your student would like to participate, please notify your teacher by Thursday, November 29th.

The top 4 students for each area will compete against other students in the state from other schools using the Online Regional Qualifying Exam.  These tests will be given online and will require a CAVA teacher to be present during the test.  The date of the test will be announced at a later date, but it will take place sometime in January.  The test must be taken by the 4 students at the exact same time.

Stage 2: The top students from the Online Regional Exam will compete against each other in a buzzer competition that is coordinated by the National History Bee.  This will be an in person event.  Students in Southern California (Regions 4 and 5) will attend the competition in Los Angeles and students in Northern California (Regions 1-3) will attend the competition in San Francisco.

Stage 3: The top participants from the 35 Regional Finals will be eligible to advance to the National Championships and compete for the title of National History Bee Champion!

Students in elementary and middle school may participate.  Students cannot participate if they have completed 8th grade or reached his/her fifteenth birthday as of August 1, 2012.

CAVA will cover the registration fee cost for each stage.  Each family is responsible for their own travel expenses.

Please look over the documents in the attached folder to help your child prepare.

Again, if your child would like to participate please notify your teacher by Thursday, November 29th

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank you,
