8th Graders ONLY - Additional Assignment Info

Hi Wonderful 8th Graders:

I just wanted to remind you of your upcoming Additional Assignment that is due March 8, 2013:

8th Grade Composition (Literary Analysis and Composition):

Composition: Assignment #6, final draft due to your teacher by March 8, 2013

(Unit 5 Lesson 12 – Research Report)

I’ve attached a few resources to help you as you prepare your final draft. If you’d like to have me review a rough draft, I would be happy to do that!  Please give me a few days prior to the due date to review your writing. Emailing would be the easiest way to do that.

And remember…your Language Arts Class Connect sessions (and recordings) guide students through each composition and are full of great support and resources, too!

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Take Care,

Christie Louis

At Home Reading/Comprehension Assessment Resource

Good Morning Cava Families!

Some of my families have inquired about access to reading level assessments to measure what current level their child is reading in.  After some research, I found a free assessment that may just help.  The website is

http://www.mindsprinting.com/mindsprinting/index.aspx

Below I have taken some snapshots of what you will come across while using this free assessment.  I want to add it does not seem all that extensive, however, it may give you an initial idea of your child’s current reading/comprehension level.

First, you’ll just fill out some initial information.

Below is a little information about the site.

The assessment will start and will provide a few different passages along with some questions.  I had quickly taken it just to be able to provide you with some snapshots.

When the student is done taking the assessment, the site will then provide you with the results.  It will compare the grade level your child is currently in (the grade level you entered to begin) to the reading/comprehension level they performed at.

I’m sure this site offers more with a fee, however, I wanted to find you something free to provide you an idea of your child’s reading level.

In Person Meeting Days - Work Sample Turn In

Good morning families!

As you know this year is FLYING by and before you know it, Quarter 3 will be coming to a close.  I wanted to provide you with some dates that I will be available in your area so that you can drop by your samples, saving a stamp or two.

Next Friday, March 8th, I will be in Tracy after 2:30.  Our very own Sierra will be taking part in the 2nd half of Cava’s Spelling Bee and is shooting for 1st place that afternoon!  Good luck Sierra! J I will then stick around until about 4 to allow any of those families that live in the Tracy area to drop by their samples.  THIS IS NOT REQUIRED but just an opportunity to physically turn them in.

I will also be providing a “Work Sample Day” at the Woodward Park location in Manteca for families to do the same.  I’m shooting for March 19th, but that has not been finalized.  At this time, Cava families will bring their work samples along with any additional assignments (from their assignment sheet) and we’ll work together to ensure all is complete for Quarter 3.  On this day after turning in work samples,  students are welcome to bring any board/sports games they wish to collaborate and mingle with their fellow classmates.  We did something similar to this at our Valentine’s Day and it worked great!  The kids had a lot of fun.

Below I have provided some snapshots of the various grade levels to ensure you’re aware of where to look to see what “additional required assignments” are due.  Please also view your pacing guides to ensure the correct assignment and where to find the unit/lesson the assignment comes from.

I HAVE ALSO ATTACHED THE WORK SAMPLE CHECKLIST FOR THE DIFFERENT QUARTERS. PLEASE PRINT AND USE THE CHECKLIST, TITLED QUARTER 3.

Please ensure that your student is labeling each work sample turned in with their

7th Grade Writing Test

Good morning Families!

I wanted to resend the email below to confirm some information about the upcoming Writing Test.  Also, there was a flyer that came out for the Lathrop site, however, you’ll want to confirm your child’s site on Cava Parent.  We try to assign students locations that are relatively close to their home.  Please view the attached zip file as there are helpful ways to prepare for this assessment.  If your child missed the class connects that were focusing on the different genres, please see one of the attachments in the file that have the recordings available.

Subject: 7th Grade Writing Test

Good Afternoon CAVA Learning Coaches,

As you are aware, the 7th grade Writing Test will be on March 5th this year.  All 7th graders will be participating in this test and it is important for them to prepare.

The 7th grade Class Connect Composition classes have reviewed 2 of the 4 genres that could possibly be chosen for the test (narrative, persuasive, response to literature, and summary writing).  The last 2 live sessions will be held the weeks of February 15th and February 25th.  If you have a 7th grader who has missed the first 2 genres (narrative and persuasive), the recordings are attached.  Please encourage your students to attend the live sessions for the last 2 genres (response to literature and summary).  Attached, you will also find additional resources and the PowerPoints that have been used in the past for test prep.

Thank you so much for all you are doing to help your students prepare for the Writing Test!  If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Thank you and have a great day!
